SAN DIEGO COMICON '08!
Comicon logo

It's that time again!  The biggest comic show in America kicks off next week--hope to see you there!

Got a spot in Artist's Alley this year, so look for me at table KK-03, right next to Christina Strain, apparently!

I'll be doing special sketching sessions at the Marvel and Zenescope booths as well, so watch for those.  As soon as I get the specific times, I'll post 'em here.

PODCAST FUN!
Had a really great interview with the ALTERNATE REALITY podcast a couple days back, and the episode (#164) just went live if you want to check it out. We chit-chatted in depth about the upcoming BIG HERO 6 series, the comics industry in general, and a whole bunch of other random crap. :)

You can stream the episode from their website http://alternatereality.podomatic.com/

or download the episode from iTunes. Just look for episode #164!

Hope you get a laugh out of it.

RIP Michael Turner
Just learned about Michael Turner's passing, and it's heartbreaking. I met Mike on my first day as a lowly intern at Top Cow. At the time, he was the company's brightest superstar, fresh off blockbuster runs on Fathom and Witchblade, and I'll remember him for the kindness he showed me that day. When I walked up to say hi, he was working on a key double-page spread for Tomb Raider #25, and though I'm sure he had better things to do than talk to some no-name intern, he took the time to make me feel welcome, to look at at my portfolio, and to give me a few pointers. I'd been a little nervous and starstruck at first, but he put me at ease.

Some popular creators let fame go to their heads, but Mike was humble, giving, and an all-around cool guy.

BIG HERO 6 Update!
The MARVEL PREVIEWS catalogue came out this week, so now you can preorder comics that ship in September--yay! So if the spirit moves you to buy...oh, I dunno...50 copies of BIG HERO SIX # 1, you can actually do that now. :)

What's that you say, Brangelina? 50's not enough for your growing brood of international adoptees? Well, don't let me stop you--by all means, order more! That's a win-win for everybody.

Back to reality for a minute, the order code's JUL082271 in case you want to lock in a copy at your local comic store.

But don't let the Pitt-Jolies hoard 'em all--act now!!

MARVEL in SEPTEMBER--HERE WE GO!
Marvel's September solicitations just came out, and I'm psyched to report that BIG HERO 6 is one of the brand new titles making its debut this month:

Pencils and inks: Me.
Color: Emily Warren

I get the strangest feeling whenever I see my own project on a list like this, and it's exactly that feeling you get when you're on a roller coaster and the cart's slowly climbing to the top of the first big hill.

You know the ride's about to start rolling at 100 mph, and you're sort of bracing yourself in anticipation.

When I see a solicitation come out, it's a reminder that yeah, this book is coming out at a set time, and it's definitely not going to draw itself! I guess I feel equal parts motivated and terrified. :)

Anyway, BH6 #1 drops in September, and though I'm done drawing the first issue, that still leaves another 88 pages to worry about. Better get crackin'!

SPIDER-MAN in ASGARD!
I was excited to see that MARVEL ADVENTURES: SPIDER-MAN #40 came out this week! Marc Sumerak wrote a fantastic script for the issue in which Spidey travels to Asgard under the influence of the Enchantress. I'll let the accompanying pic speak for itself, but yeah, it's a lot of fun. :)

EAST, WEST, and BIG HERO 6!

Pencils and Inks: Me

One of my favorite things about the community at DeviantArt.com is the way it gives me access to art from people all over the world, that I'd never get to see otherwise, and in every conceivable style. I don't know about you, but I've been turned on to all sorts of cool new art thanks to that site.

But I always go back to two styles in particular--American comic book art and Japanese anime. Which isn't uncommon obviously, but in my case, it probably has a lot to do with the way I grew up. I guess when you have a Japanese dad and a Caucasian mom, and you grow up in Hawaii surrounded by Japanese influences on the one hand and American on the other, you inevitably end up with tastes like mine. When I was a kid, I loved Starblazers and Robotech just as much as the X-men and Spider-man, and that's still true today.

And it really comes into play when I'm drawing. I don't know if you can tell just by looking, but there's always a back-and-forth pull between Eastern and Western influences that ultimately ends up as my 'style.'

In recent years, I've been working in the American comic book market, and to get work, it seemed like a good idea to tamp down the Asian side of things and push a more mainstream, Western style.

But things just took an interesting turn.

Turns out that I'll be drawing a new Marvel comic called BIG HERO 6, and it's about a team of superpowered operatives... from Japan. Which means all the Eastern influence I've been holding back for years can finally come out and do some good! We're just a few pages into the first issue, but everyone on the art team's pretty excited about the East-meets-West style we're using on the book.

My partner in crime on this is Emily Warren, one of the best digital painters I've ever seen and (going back to my opening thoughts) an artist I first encountered here on DA. It's a real privilege to team up with an artist of her caliber.

Chris Claremont's writing the book, and Marvel just released the first preview images today on Joe Quesada's MYCUP O' JOE Blog:

Anyway, more news on this later, but I hope people enjoy BIG HERO 6 half as much as we're enjoying working on it. :)

New Zenescope Covers
Is there anything more fun to draw than sexy comic book women? Not that I'm aware of, and that's why I love working with Zenescope Entertainment. Sex appeal is the company's bread and butter, and if you're a comic fan in the mood for cheesecake, it's really the only game in town.

Speaking of cake, here's a new one we just finished for the Wizard World Philly convention:

Fans of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers might recognize the imagery from the band's 'Don't Come Around Here No More' video. And that's no accident--turns out that Zenescope founder Ralph Tedesco's a big fan and thought it'd be fun to do a little homage on the cover of the Tales of Wonderland: Mad Hatter one-shot.

This next one's another con exclusive, this time for Zenescope's new 1001 Arabian Nights series featuring Sinbad.
